The H4 designation was assigned to the first Halogen dual filament bulb homologated by the ECE (European Union) in 1970. It is the most common bulb in use world wide. It has many variations in voltage, wattage, color and construction. The single over-riding criteria is that it will fit in a lamp designed to the H4 standard. They designated use of an H4 bulb, but with changes and the DOT designation 9003 was assigned. These changes involved voltage, Wattage and light color while maintaining the basic H4 design. There were some other changes made primarily in the area of construction tolerances. A 9003 is basically an H4 12 Volt 60/55 Watt bulb with a light color of about 3200 Degree Kelvin.
